This Black Friday, more shoppers will start with an AI assistant. Very few will let it finish. We read 17 reports published in 2026 by analysts, platforms, payment companies and industry bodies, and the same pattern runs through all of them.
In brief: In 2026 AI becomes where Black Friday shopping starts, not where it ends. Adobe expects AI traffic to US retail sites to rise 130% this holiday season, yet only 4% of US shoppers expect to buy gifts through AI tools (PwC). In Great Britain, 40% would let AI find the best price and 5% would let it complete a purchase (YouGov).
A record season, a careful shopper
Adobe expects US online sales of $275.1 billion between 1 November and 31 December, up 6.7%, with Black Friday at $12.9 billion, up 9.2% (Adobe, 28 Sep 2026). Deloitte forecasts holiday retail sales of $1.70 trillion to $1.71 trillion from November to January (Deloitte, 10 Sep 2026).
But Bain says inflation will account for more than half of the rise (Bain & Company, 3 Sep 2026), and budgets are not growing. Circana's average is $779 against $796 last year (Circana, 8 Oct 2026). Teneo's median is $680, down from $750 (Teneo, Oct 2026). 38% of Americans expect to spend less, against 16% who expect to spend more (Morning Consult, Oct 2026). The season grows on price and online share, not on bigger baskets.
AI moves to the start of the journey
Adobe expects AI traffic to US retail sites, counted when a shopper clicks a link inside an AI tool, to rise 130% this season, with Black Friday up 95% (Adobe, 28 Sep 2026). Three independent surveys in two countries show the same direction.

The research is AI's. The purchase is not.
Ask shoppers what they will let AI do, and the line is clear. 64% of people who use AI for gift ideas open a separate tab to buy, rather than use the link the tool recommends (PwC, 8 Sep 2026). Shopify's survey of 18,000 shoppers in nine countries finds 65% will use AI for at least one task, but only one-third trusted an agent to buy for them (Shopify, 6 Oct 2026).

AI adds a step rather than replacing one: shoppers who use it for inspiration consult 4.48 sources on average, against 3.24 for those who do not (Gartner, 7 Oct 2026). Salesforce sees the result in its data, with global digital traffic up 18% in the second quarter and orders up just 1% (Salesforce, 20 Jul 2026).

Retailers are building faster than shoppers delegate
Salesforce predicts one in three e-commerce sites will run their own shopper agent by Cyber Week (Salesforce, 20 Jul 2026). Yet only 15% of merchants have the structured data that makes their products, prices and policies readable by AI agents, according to Visa (Visa, 2026). The bigger gap this season is not the retailer's own agent. It is being readable by the assistants shoppers already use.
Trust: the brand you know still wins
Shoppers say they trust AI advice: 74% trust product recommendations from AI chat (Salesforce, 20 Jul 2026). Look closer and the trust is conditional. In Great Britain, 48% of AI shoppers worry about biased or sponsored recommendations, and 47% find it hard to tell whether discounts are genuine (YouGov, 8 Oct 2026).

AI also opens the door: 71% of regular AI users are more likely to choose an independent brand this year (Shopify, 6 Oct 2026). Both findings fit. AI widens the shortlist; a familiar name still wins the click.
Europe and the UK: same direction, slower pace
Only 15% of adults in Great Britain have used AI to shop, second from bottom of 19 markets (YouGov, 8 Oct 2026), and the IPA finds limited appetite for AI in Christmas preparations (IPA, 2026). Across Europe, 61% of consumers already use AI for product discovery, while fully autonomous purchasing remains limited, according to EuroCommerce (EuroCommerce, 10 Jun 2026).
What it means for marketers
96% of major brands already use generative or agentic AI in marketing, according to the WFA (WFA, 30 Sep 2026). The question is where to point it this season.
- Be readable before Thanksgiving. AI traffic peaks on the deal days. Prices, stock and return policies need to be structured and consistent before the season starts.
- Make the discount verifiable. Shoppers doubt whether deals are real. Clear reference prices travel further in AI answers than big percentages.
- Build familiarity now. The known brand gets the click in an AI list. Awareness built in October pays off in November.
- Keep the checkout yours. Most AI-assisted shoppers leave the tool to buy. Make the landing page answer the question they asked.
- Measure AI as its own channel, separately from search and social.
These reports use different methods, samples and periods. Adobe, Salesforce, Shopify, PayPal, Visa and Bazaarvoice sell into commerce and AI. We quote each figure as published and do not add them together.
